Abstract: | A simple screening technique was applied to nineteen samples of soil collected in the Ibadan area and resulted in the isolation of forty-three strains of spore-forming aerobic rods, of which twenty strains showed antimicrobial effect. Most of these possessed antifungal effect. One isolate (No. 2) strongly inhibited Klebsiella aerogenes, and another (No. 40) showed strong antibiotic effect on Gram positive, Gram-negative and acid-fast bacteria, yeasts and moulds. Identification of the isolates and characterization of their antibiotic products is under investigation |
