Abstract: Patients' presentation at the dental clinic is mostly related to pain. This study aims at documenting the current trend in the pattern of patients' presentation and the impact of dental diseases on quality of life. &#xD;
Materials and Methods This is a descriptive, cross sectional survey of consecutive patients attending the Oral Diagnosis &#xD;
Clinic UCH, Ibadan. Data was collected with a validated, structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Information collected, included: demographic variables, clinic attendance, &#xD;
reasons for presentation, attitude to oral health, oral hygiene practices and questions to assess the impact of oral disease on quality of life. Data was subjected to analysis using SPSS. Results There were 300 respondents, consisting of 167 females (55.6%} and 133 males (44.4%}. The &#xD;
age range was 16-86 years with a mean of 38.21(± 16.10} years. The majority, 54.3% were aged &#xD;
20-39 years. The commonest reason for seeking help was pain of dental origin (56%} Only a few&#xD;
(5.7%} attended dental clinic regularly for checkups. The relationship between social class and &#xD;
previous dental visit was insignificant (p= 0.07}. Majority (80.7%) used tooth brush and paste to &#xD;
clean their mouth but only 41.0% do so twice daily. The impact of oral disease on daily activity &#xD;
as highest in the order of eating and enjoying food (61.7%), work disturbance (44.4%) and &#xD;
sleep disturbance (42.2%). &#xD;

      <title>THE KNOWLEDGE OF ORAL CANCER AMONG HOUSE OFFICERS IN THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN</title>
      <link>http://adhlui.com.ui.edu.ng/jspui/handle/123456789/1531</link>
      <description>Title: THE KNOWLEDGE OF ORAL CANCER AMONG HOUSE OFFICERS IN THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN
Authors: AMBEKE, ANNABEL
Abstract: Oral cancer is the 6th most common malignancy in the world and an important cause of morbidity &#xD;
and mortality with varying incidence according to geographical location, gender or age. The role &#xD;
of health care professionals particularly the medical practitioner in the diagnosis of oral cancer is &#xD;
important especially in the early stages when symptoms of malignancy are not florid, treatment is &#xD;
most effective and morbidity is minimal at this stage. There is the need for a high index of &#xD;
suspicion among medical doctors because most patients visit the medical practitioners who are &#xD;
more in number compared to dentists. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the knowledge and &#xD;
opinions of both dental and medical house officers in order to determine areas of deficiency in oral &#xD;
cancer knowledge. &#xD;
A cross-sectional survey of all the House officers in the employment of the University College &#xD;
Hospital, Ibadan between August 2011 and July 2012 was done. A total sample of 170 House &#xD;
officers were recruited in order to get a statistically significant number. A pretested semi structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on socio-demographics, &#xD;
perceived and true knowledge of oral cancer and level of competency in the management of oral &#xD;
cancer. Likert scale was used to determine perceived knowledge level. Very well, well and &#xD;
reasonably informed were categorized as good knowledge level while poorly and not informed &#xD;
were categorized as poor knowledge level. True knowledge and competency level were assessed &#xD;
on 100% scale and scores of 50% and above were categorized as good knowledge and competent &#xD;
level and less than or equal to 49% as poor knowledge and competent level. Data was analyzed &#xD;
using SPSS version 15. &#xD;
A total of 170 respondents participated in the study, 58.5% were males and 41.2% were females. &#xD;
Majority (72.9%) of the respondents were medical doctors; overall mean age was 26.04; 72.4% &#xD;
obtained information about oral cancer from academic meetings; 62.1 % of the medical doctors &#xD;
obtained their information from a single source while 52.2% and 32.6% of the dentist had their &#xD;
information from double and multiple sources respectively. (X2 = 39.8; p-value &lt;0.0001). It was &#xD;
also observed that 59.3% of the medical doctors claimed to be reasonably informed while 47.8% &#xD;
of the dentist claimed to be well informed (X2 = 30.9; p-value &lt;0.0001). Assessment of true &#xD;
knowledge of oral cancer with respect to the knowledge of risk factors, 89.1 % the dentists and &#xD;
58.9% of the medical doctors had good knowledge (X2 = 13.91; p-value &lt; 0.0001). Majority of the &#xD;
respondents both medical doctors (71.8%) and dentists (76.1 %) had good knowledge on the &#xD;
clinical features of oral cancer. For knowledge of the preventive role of micronutrients on oral &#xD;
cancer and approach to management, it was generally a poor outcome. Overall, the relationship &#xD;
between true and perceived knowledge of respondents was a positive but very weak association &#xD;
(R = 0.167; X2 = 5.495; p-value = 0.240). Educators need to place more emphasis on oral cancer education and training of undergraduate medical and dental students

      <description>Title: KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND UPTAKE OF VOLUNTARY COUNSELLING AND TESTING FOR HIV/ AIDS AMONG MEDICAL DOCTORS AND DENTISTS IN SOUTH WESTERN NIGERIA
Authors: ABE, ELIZABETH OLUWATOYIN
Abstract: HIV/ AIDS pandemic, being one of the important public health problems with profound effect on &#xD;
the lives of infected people and their families, has a sero- prevalence rate of 4.6% in Nigeria. Just &#xD;
like the general population, healthcare workers are at risk of acquiring HIV via sexual contact, &#xD;
but are also faced with additional occupational risks from needle pricks and sharps injuries. &#xD;
Voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) has been identified as the access point to HIV/AIDS &#xD;
clinical care and psychological support. It also provides an opportunity for education and &#xD;
motivation to modify behaviour aimed at reducing the risk of HIV transmission. &#xD;
&#xD;
This study was designed to determine the level of knowledge, attitude and uptake of VCT for &#xD;
HIV/AIDS among medical doctors and dentists in South Western Nigeria. &#xD;
Methodology &#xD;
A descriptive cross- sectional study was conducted among medical doctors and dentists within &#xD;
south Western Nigeria between January to June, 2014. Data was collected using self administered questionnaires and analysed using SPSS version 15. &#xD;
Results &#xD;
Among the 275 participants which comprised 55% medical doctors and 45% dentists, a high &#xD;
I vel of knowledge about VCT (78.9%) was noted with a statistically significant higher level of knowledge about VCT among medical doctors compared to dentists (p= 0.000). Also, there was ignificant association between uptake of HIV testing and participants' working experiencesuch that the proportion of those who had done HIV testing increased with their years of practice &#xD;
(p= 0.037). Majority of the participants (95.2%) agreed with the idea of free treatment coverage &#xD;
for HIV positive members of staff and their sero- positive family members under workplace &#xD;
VCT services. &#xD;
Conclusion Overall, this study observed a high level of knowledge of VCT, a highly supportive attitude towards workplace VCT and a very high uptake of HIV counselling and testing practice among medical doctors and dentists in South Western Nigeria
